There are subdivisions here where every house is under fifteen years old, the stucco is one of three colors and the garage still smells like new drywall — houses built directly on top of what was working farmland a generation ago. And then the pavement changes, the lots get long and deep, and you are on semi-rural acreage: block walls giving way to fencing, a shed that predates the subdivision, irrigation left over from the fields, citrus and mesquite that nobody has cut back in years.
